Hoobidigah!

Had a faster-than-average Thursday morning ride today... not that that's saying much. I was all tuckered out from Wednesday.... I spent an hour surging off the front just to annoy a local wheelsucker... totally not worth it. Legs hurt now, gotta poops.

Busy as hell

been 'stremely busy the last couple of weeks at work... everybody and their brother wants a bike this time of year. It's made it difficult to find time to train. Typical day is wake up, ride until 10, class until 12, work until 8... so been kind of glassy-eyed. Classes end at the end of july, that'll be nice. Right now I'm riding five times a week... tues, wed, thurs, sat, sun. After the Tour de Ports, I'm switching over to mtbing...

VbW, Hilbert, Bryan Park, and upcoming

Race #1: VBW Smackdown. 8 Cat 5s race in the rain, through tight corners, and generally take it easy. No warm up, because it was raining so hard that you couldn't get warm. Just went out there, screwed around, and got 5th. Whatever.
Race #2: Camp Hilbert MTB-- did the sport. Borrowed The Eminent Flyin' Kleiman's bike, which was set up for a lot harder-packed surfaces than rooty ole Hilbert. Showed up at the registration tent with 18 seconds to go. Needless to say, it didn't go well... but I didn't get last either. I've got to either suck it up and get a mountain bike, or just quit doing these damn races.
Race #3: (today): The Carytown Bicycle Company's Bryan Park circuit race. Did the Cat 4/5 non-Bar. I had work today in W'burg, but entry was only three bucks, and I got a chance to race at the park where I refereed soccer games for years and years. The course was awesome-- I'll definitely be back for this race. A ton of fun, perfect weather. I knew Cory Scott was in the race (dude is somehow still a five, despite beating the crap out of the entire tidewater.... come on Cory, get with it), so I just went for the early break.... started with 14 guys, we eventually shelled all but 7 of them. Last lap, and Scott's teammate put on the juice to lead Cory out... That's when I came off. Dave E. made a monster bridge up to the group but only passed one guy ahead of me... JRVS gets 4th (dave) and 6th (scooter). Someone else with a beard was in the back... don't know who.
This week: monster miles.
next week: monster miles.
third week: Pennsylvania Dutch Country Stage Race... 2200 dollars for the 4 race.

The return of the author

Whoah, it's been a long time. Not that much has happened racing-wise since the Oyster Point fiasco. Sunday (6/3) I raced the VBW Smackdown, aka the TCC crit. We raced through Hurricane Barry's fringes, so there was a steady downpour for the first half of the race. Two guys (of a starting field of eight) slid out, but with no injuries apparently, because they got back on a chased. I think one of them one. I was pretty uncomfortable hitting sharp wet corners, and ended up wasting most of the scooter juice sprinting to catch up. Into the last two corners, someone jumped to get in first, and we all followed. I got gapped into the final corner, and rode in by myself for 5th. It was actually a really fun race-- no BAR points so it was very relaxed, more of a training exercise than a race. Cool. Wednesday (earlier this evening) we did the 5:30 BikeBeat Hammerama, hammering supplied by my one-hit wonder co-author, Matthew Q. Kleiman. I was a non-entity in the finishing sprint, but at least I got that far. I'm crazy sore right now, and I can only hope that being pounded on by a guy who used to race Georgie (Porgie) Hincapie will translate into better results.
Which brings us to the next race. Up next for most of VA is the Amphib Assault. I'm all, "shit on that noise," and will thus be girding my loins for CAMP HILBERT, the whoop-de-do capital of the world.
Sweet, I am gonna tear open the sport me (he said)
